UTC (Coordinated Universal Time) is the world's primary time standard. Every time zone on Earth is defined by its offset from UTC — for example, New York is UTC-5 in winter and UTC-4 in summer, while Tokyo is UTC+9 year-round.
When someone says they are in the "GMT+2" timezone, they mean their clocks are set two hours ahead of UTC. When Daylight Saving Time (DST) is in effect, many countries shift their clocks forward by one hour, temporarily changing their UTC offset.

Every city page uses the IANA Timezone Database — the international standard used by every major OS, programming language, and cloud platform. Your browser's built-in Intl.DateTimeFormat API handles the conversion, meaning the time you see is calculated from your own device's clock, localized to the city you're viewing.
Time zones seem simple on the surface — the Earth rotates 360°, we divide the day into 24 slices — but the reality is far more complex. Political decisions, trade relationships, and historical accidents have shaped timezone boundaries in surprising ways. China uses a single timezone for a country that spans five geographic zones. Spain observes Central European Time despite being at the same longitude as the UK. India uses a half-hour offset (UTC+5:30) that affects 1.4 billion people.
DST is observed by roughly 70 countries, but on different schedules. Most of Europe changes clocks on the last Sunday of March and October. The US uses the second Sunday of March and first Sunday of November. Australia shifts clocks in the opposite direction due to its Southern Hemisphere seasons.
